With Liberty and Justice for SOME

Citizen's statement during Leroy Boyd forum on April 14, 2016

In defense of Fire Chief Schmidt and Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Glover

Here we are,,,,, over 70 days into this witch hunt and we're no closer to having answers than when this all began.

Meanwhile, Chief Glover is away on military duty, serving our country to protect the very freedoms we SHOULD ALL enjoy. With more than 30 years of military service, you would think he would also be enjoying the freedom, justice and equality that come with living in this great country. Instead, Chief Glover awaits the results of this unbelievable conspiracy designed to destroy him. And this is the way Ashton Hayward and his administration want to show their gratitude for Chief Glover’s years of service to our country????

Just a thought: Every council meeting begins with The Pledge of Allegiance, saying, …..with liberty and justice for ALL. Maybe it should be changed to say ,,,,,,“with liberty and justice for SOME”

You claim that this investigation has nothing to do with race????
But, that is exactly what this is about. Years of systemic racism, denied and ignored for far too long. And when someone like Chief Glover speaks out about racism, well, you see what it gets you – this witch hunt to destroy his reputation, to destroy him at any cost and to make an example out of him for anyone else that might want to speak out about racism that exist for some city employees. You rule by intimidation and fear, not by justice for the wrongs that have occurred.

Here's a question...
What if Ashton Hayward, Rusty Wells, Eric Olson, and Ed Sisson were all black????  Would their behavior be tolerated????
Now that we know about of some of their lies, and attempts of deception and crookedness, imagine what would happen to them if they were all black!!!!!!

And what if Chief Glover was white????  Never mind, if he were white we wouldn't be here discussing this now, would we??     If he had been a white man, he would have received the same pay as his other white counterparts and contemporaries.  Chief Schmitt is being made an example of what happens to you if you dare speak out against racism even if you happen to be white.

Now I'll ask the same question that I asked the last time I was here.  How many total days has this administration spent investigating reported race discrimination? Can you give me that answer, NOW????  Why aren’t those accused of the racist behavior on administrative leave and under investigation? Why are only Chief Schmitt and Glover on administrative leave? This makes absolutely NO sense.

How many employees have been suspended after being accused of race discrimination?  If the answer is NO ONE, Ashton Hayward, what's your message when the only people suspended are the ones who actually reported race discrimination?  Doesn’t anyone on the council have a problem with that?  Ashton Hayward, you alone can stop this and you haven’t so far.

We are at day 72 or 73 into this mysterious investigation about who knows what!  The mayor and the city administrator can't even agree on what the investigation is about. The assistant city administrator stated that he had no idea what the investigation was about...

This whole thing disgusts me.  I can't believe that Ed Sisson, Eric Olson, and Rusty Wells still work for the city after what they've done.  Then again, their corruption, lies, and misdeeds are overlooked because of the color of their skin.

You see, sometimes it works in your favor to be judged by the color of your skin and not to be judged by the content of your character!!!  That's what I call "pulling the race card"!!!

Eric Olson, Rusty Wells, and Ed Sisson, I'm asking again for each of your resignations. And I’m also asking for a recall on the mayor, Ashton Hayward.

Wait...didn't Olson put out a gag order? Guess that doesn't work on citizens who aren't afraid to exercise their rights under the 1st Amendment!

Olson's gag order was to city employees, and they are all scared to speak up. Hayward has been treating city employees like this since he took office.

Maren, I have been coming to this blog now almost daily hoping upon hope that at some point there would be evidence that the Mayor has done anything that remotely resembles leadership. Instead, it appears at least in my circles, that people who were once staunch supporters have grown weary of his abilities. Some seriously regret the change to the strong Mayor form of government which still only represents a select few people.

I realize that you do not particularly care for Hayward (Understatement of the decade!), nevertheless, with each passing day it becomes harder to disagree with your assessment of him and his staff. I am now firmly in favor of a recall with the caveat that needed amendments to the Charter be made and Hayward is replaced by someone who will represent all of Pensacola's citizens.

Hayward is definitely in a no win situation here. Do you get unlimited mulligans just because Jerry Pate is your BFF?

Yes...a few of us (too few IMHO) spoke out. The Mayor and his minions have no power over us!

Speaking out on any topic where there is a right / wrong by legal or common society standards is what gets you in trouble. Its not just racial issues and it doesn't have to be public. your private advice and council can not be contrary or in any way seen as a barrier to his will.

Anonymous at 3:16 PM...you are correct that it's more than just race issues; however, this witch hunt which is now in its 3rd month, I believe is without precedent. That's partially why this issue has received so much attention. Again, I agree wholeheartedly that Hayward demands unethical and when necessary illegal allegiance to him.

Ashton needs to just fire them already and be done with it. It's clear to see that there's never been any intention to bring them back to work. Once terminated the Chiefs can sue for wrongful termination, harassment, retaliation for filing the EEOC complaint and whatever else the city has done to them.

Amazingly, it's 2016 but it feels like 1966 all over again in the "Upside" of Florida. It seems as though this is exactly what the powers that be in this town want. Tragically, things will continue to be this way and perhaps even get worse because there is still a high level of tolerance for racism in this community. Blacks and whites alike seem to be in denial, disinterested, or afraid to speak out against racial injustice. There is more public outrage over food trucks, downtown parking, dog parks, sidewalks, trees, fish hatchery, etc. than this modern day "lynching". In my view, the person who spoke these words at the council meeting was spot on, pointing out the hypocrisy in pledging allegiance to to the flag, proclaiming liberty and justice for all, but then turning a blind eye to injustice. Strong Mayor or not, if city counil is powerless to act on any impropriety or injustice perpetuated by anyone in the city they are useless. I am a lifelong resident but I encouraged my children to leave Pensacola to pursue their careers in spite of their education and qualifications because of the systemic racism they would have to face here. It's only the "Upside" if you have the right skin color. It's the "Downside" if you have the wrong skin color. I'm sure that everyone who is reading this knows the "right" and "wrong" skin colors which says something about where we are as a society. It's amazing to me that so many dreaded diseases have been cured and how everyone is all-in to cure cancer; yet, the disease of racism continues to eat away at the Human race with very little resistance.

City Employees do talk. No one likes the Mayor. No one ever has. When all of Pensacola thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread, City Employees knew very quick into his administration, Day 1,that he was a useless, dull tool. A waste of space. He's loud, obnoxious, not bright at all, and demands you drop everything to kiss his ring when he walks into a room. Obviously one has to watch watch what they say, to whom they say it but if the fire chiefs do read this blog, 99% of City Employees are rooting for them and hope the outcome has Ashton Hayward thrown out on his ass. In the meantime, fake smiles, fake laughs will permeate City Hall whenever that loud, obnoxious voice is heard throughout the corridors. Those citizens demanding and continually talking about doing a recall should do it already.

^Anonymous 5:08 nailed it! Practically every city employee is talking about this ordeal in hopes that Olson and Sisson are shown the door for sure. No one believes a word coming out of the mayor's mouth but everyone just seems to be in survival mode right now. Employees are depending on the Chiefs to prevail so that the mistreatment of all employees will finally be exposed.

I guarantee he doesn't have the guts to fire them. I noticed on the news tonight that the city continues to reiterate that it's not disciplinary. That is what you call a major cop out! I certainly hope that they have a better defense than "it's wasn't disciplinary"! The Chiefs are now probably hoping to be terminated so that they can own the city.
