The Systematic Intentional Embarassment of Two Career Firefighters

Yesterday was another just another day for Interim Fire Chief Matt Schmitt and Deputy Chief Joseph Glover.  They were at their offices in the morning and left together to attend a previously scheduled meeting with Eric Olson.  Nothing all together strange about that. One assumes it must be something the City leadership doesn't want in email.  That's how things work in Pensacola, waste hundreds of dollars in labor time to keep from sending an email that a Citizen might get.

These two career firefighters walk out to the Chief's City vehicle and make the short drive over to City Hall.  When they get there they are escorted to a room and met by Tracy Walsh, the Witness, and Assistant City Administrator Keith Wilkins who they had never met before.

Each man is given a letter, unsigned by any City official, on the Mayor's letterhead, informing them that they are being placed on administrative leave.

From: Keith Wilkins
Re: Administrative Leave

The City has been made aware of circumstances that require an investigation be completed within the Fire Department.  Effective immediately, you are placed on Administrative Leave until otherwise directed.  Your pay and benefits will remain unchanged during the investigation process.

Upon receipt of this memorandum you are required to return any/all City items issued through the City's Technology Resources Office, the Garage and the Human Resources Office.  Specifically, this includes your City identification badge, fleet car keys, building access keys, cell phones, radios, laptops, pagers and/or any and all other items that would provide for your access to City facilities and property. Because you will be on leave with pay, you are expected to receive and return call or other forms of communication from City staff or their representatives until the investigation has been completed.  If you have personal items you wish to collect from your office, you may contact me at 435-5627 and I will arrange their delivery.

Your restrictions are as follows:
  • Immediately and until the investigation is completed, you are not to contact or discuss this investigation with any City employee
  • You are on Administrative Leave and must be available at the City's convenience during normal working hours should we contact/request to meet with you.
  • You will not utilize a take home vehicle.
  • You will not operate a City vehicle.
  • You are to provide in this memorandum the number in which you can be reached during working hours
  • You are prohibited from accessing, directly or through another user, any and all City mainframe or network computer systems containing any and all PFD information.
Failure to comply with the restrictions outlined in this memorandum may subject you to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Through your signature below, you are acknowledging receipt of this memorandum.
__________

With that 2 men that have spent their lives protecting and serving the Citizens of Pensacola were escorted from the building while two senior Hayward officials, the subject of their complaints, sat in their offices, not being placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, one dreaming of his bassett hound and the other looking for someone's boss to call.

The Chiefs were not even provided a ride.  That's right...they had to look for a ride home.

And for what?  They weren't even told!

More later!

RACISTS!!!

Hmmm....They must have committed the heinous crime of sending an email to a DOD address which we all know is the unpardonable sin. That would be totally unprofessional, unlike the professional pic sent to a subordinate by none other than the HR, SHBA, CEBA, LMNOP, etc.

The pic with the hound is only surpassed by the professionalism demonstrated by the dirigible city administrator.

This is a modern day lynching. Mr. Glover needs to get to a an attorney immediately. You are being railroaded in retaliation for making an EOC complaint. Your brother firefighter is going to speak against you. Get help, Mr. Glover.

I'm ashamed that we have such a horrible and spineless Mayor, City administrator and now Assistant City Administrator. It didn't take Keith Wilkins long to become another spineless pawn of Ashton Hayward. Karma will be hard for those jerks when the Feds finish their investigation and hand-cuff the Mayor and escort him out of the building. I hope these firemen sue City Hall for their failure to follow HR procedures.

I cannot believe that this City Administrator and even the HR Director gets away with some of the things they do. The City Administrator NEEDS TO GO. Mr. Wilkins has more experience than the current one.

So Eric Olson and The Box are trying to send a message to ALL City Employees. That message is NEVER go against the FAMILY. Another Family rule: Never use your email. If you got something to say, you better say it person. For a guy who moved all day long, Pauly didnt talk to people about unions, or a beef in the numbers. Unethical, criminal activities done in the dark shall come to light. Snitches get stitches. 2 got left by the getaway car. City personnel beware. Jimmy can have you whacked anywhere at anytime after The Lufthansa heist. All should be encouged to throw pies.

There are no black directors or department heads within the City. If you have been with the City longer than 10 years, you know that a newer, less advanced model will be hired thru their connections with Ashton, and they will be trained by you only to make more money and not do the job they were hired to do. You will continue to do your job and their job at the same time because there really wasn't a need to hire them in the first place. They were just given some fancy title while making $30,000 MORE than you. Why? Because they're not black.

Here is the thing here.... Maren honey YOU were a vocal advocate FOR the Charter. Again, just like many other FAILED CITY ENDEAVORS if you spoke out, you were a Naysayer. You were holding the City back.... you were negative..blah blah blah.

When we had a "PROFESSIONAL CITY MANAGER" and an engaged City Council NEVER EVER did we have the craziness, the level of corruption, the level of embarrassments, the level of issues we are seeing over the last 6 years. Never, in the HISTORY of Pensacola was there such a vagrant disregard for the laws, ordinance and state statutes in the governance and management of our City.

Without a question, THIS CHARTER HAS FAILED MISERABLY.

What Anonymous 6:49 PM said, This is absolutely a modern day public lynching. The Mayor has really gone too far this time. This is no different than what was done during slavery through the 60s when they would Lynch a black man for getting out of line. Deputy Chief Glover is a good man and it's shameful that he has to go through this once again. I only hope that black people and white people who oppose racism will finally stand together against this type of nonsense and make it clear that this cannot be tolerated any longer.

Really confused here ... everyone is screaming Racists and lynching ... when two people got taken out of City Hall. Mike Schmitt is white guy and none of you are talking about him why is that? Pot calling the Kettle black!! Maybe just a little bit.

I agree with the 10:56 a.m. posting. The charter has been an absolute disaster. Pensacola needs a professional city manager to handle operations. The way city employees are treated is a travesty. Unless an employee's conduct is egregious, they should be given an opportunity to improve their performance. Does Hayward ever sit down with department directors and set out expectations, establish goals, etc. Of course not. That would establish a paper trail and the employee would have an opportunity to show that they met expectations. Hayward prefers the "fire, ready, aim" approach to dealing with personnel issues. Good luck Matt and Joe. If it helps, you're in good company. Many senior members of staff have been been shown the door without explanation or due process. The good news is that most of them landed in better places and are glad they no longer work for the City of Pensacola.

Dear Really confused, Mike Schmidt played 3rd base for the Phillies...Anyway, while true the emphasis is primarily being placed on the black guy, it's clear the reason that Matt Schmitt is also being lynched is because he supported the black guy. This now makes him enemy #1.

Eric Olson can unethically try to destroy the livelihood of a tax paying citizens well being by calling her boss to try to get her fired from her job, LIE to the citizens, the media, city staff, condescendingly address City Council and the public at a meeting, but not once was put on leave with pay or reprimanded. BULLSHIT!!
To the Anon poster questioning why some are pulling out the race card, this is why! Glover is simply asking for what others are given to on a silver platter. No one is talking about Schmidt because he stood up for Glover. City Hall his a disgusting disgrace and those in charge should be ashamed of themselves.
The next time these politicians come thru the hood looking for the black vote, remember this, Pensacola. What is Ms Wynn, Mr. Wingate, and Mr. Wu going to do about this as the only minorites on Council? Nothing, so remember them too.

Check out ricksblog. It seems that Tracy Walsh updated the HR manual after Glover and Schmitt were summarily relieved of duty. Anyone who participates in this process should be ashamed -- and should realize that they could be next.. I don't know how people who turn a blind eye and do as they're told rather than doing the right thing can look at themselves in the mirror.

Looks like this conspiracy has blown up in the city's face. I don't know much about Matt Smitt but Joe Glover has had a reputation for standing up for what's right for many years. He has been railroaded because he refused to kiss the Mayor's ring like others have. He's put his neck on the line on many occasions and has done a lot for the community. Even though I don't know Matt, neither one of these men deserved to be treated the way they have. Now it appears that someone else will end up being the fall guy/gal in this mess.

Anonymous said...

So true on all points. In order to carry out this conspiracy, several parties at city hall had to be involved. It will be interesting to watch how this all unravels.

So it took almost the entire week for City Hall to finally come out and say the Chiefs are not under investigation. How pitiful and shameful. The next city council meeting should be interesting. First Olson goes after Melanie Nichols, now he goes after the top 2 fire officials who have served for many years.

I would like for someone to ask the firemen how they feel about those two Chiefs. None of the firemen are speaking out on their behalf - should that tell us something? We've read no comments like, "he is a great leader” or “he makes this place better”. Only that they (BOTH) have been slighted - with no real specifics.

Granted, they may all be afraid of disciplinary action if they say "Hooray!" But has one of them publicly come out in support? Don’t think so.

Maybe before we all get uptight over perceived racial issues (“lynching”?!) we should be asking if these men where actually doing their jobs or just showing up to be the two highest paid. Remember - The Pensacola Police Chief (arguably the most powerful department head) is a well-respected black man.

I agree, the process of removal that day (give us your keys and badge, find a ride) was utterly disrespectful. What an awful way to treat any employee unless a criminal charge is being investigated (and it sounds like it's not criminal).

In the military we referred to it as weak leadership. Are these Chiefs good leaders? Why hasn’t anyone who worked for them said that? Is that department thriving in spite of them, or because of them, or at all? Take a survey of the firemen before placing them so high on pedestals. Maybe there’s more to this than what you’re focusing on.

^Ok Eric Olson...you know damn good and well why no one is speaking up, it's because you and Ashton will have them fired by sun up. The City is now ran by spinless criminals who alter and break the laws that were in place. Good luck finding your soul.

Lol

^^^Heres a better idea genius, how about an anonymous poll by city employees on the leadership in City Hall? Poll whether or not they trust the mayor, Olson, Sisson, etc.

I can't believe that you were actually in the military. It's obvious that you're completely blind to the fact that these silent firefighters have been given gag orders. Their complying because they don't want to become casualties of the next "code red". Ed, is that you?

Some argue that it's not about racism. First of all, to completely dismiss this without considering race as at least a part of the conversation would be just burying your head in the sand. I don't know everything about this situation. But, this seems to be about the black chief who disputed his salary when compared to his white counterparts. I believe that is what the EEOC complaint is about. The other chief who happens to be white must have spoken on the other chief's behalf and the city is now trying to fire them. So, even though the white chief is getting the same punishment, race seems to be a part of the equation.
