How the Pulse is Damaging the Reputations of the Chiefs

The inaccurate and false reporting of the Mayor's word burper and his pedicab flunky is disgusting although anyone that knows these two should not be surprised.

Cosson and Buchanan started the Pulse for Bob Kerrigan to have an outlet for good news all the time for and about the Mayor.  They go on and on about their journalistic integrity and mission: to provide the Gulf Coast with free, fair, and independent journalism. But when you break it down they fill around their personal agenda articles with press releases and historical photo montages.

At their base, they are political hacks.

For example, let's break down their "news" coverage of the Fire Chief story.  Italics are Pulse quotes:

February 17  - Facebook - Two suspended Pensacola Fire Department officials were involved in an employee complaint just months ago False and defamatory; suspended is a disciplinary action.  The chiefs are on non-disciplinary administrative leave.  Cosson knows this but continues to defame.

February 17 - Pensacola Deputy Fire Chief was Subject of 2015 Complaint - Biased with Intent to Mislead The Pensacola Deputy Fire Chief was Cleared in a 2015 Complaint
  • Two suspended Pensacola Fire Department officials - False and defamatory; suspended is a disciplinary action.  The chiefs are on non-disciplinary administrative leave.  Cosson knows this but continues to defame.
  • were involved in a complaint filed last year - Technically correct but intentionally misleading; Schmitt was involved only because he was the department head dealing with the issue and in their roles both men are probably "involved" one way or another in EVERY complaint at the Fire Department.  How many other complaints were the Chiefs "involved" in Derek?
  • a decision that was later overturned by the City's human resources office - Biased to protect Sisson; Sisson, the HR Director overturned the decision.  There was not a departmental meeting held to discuss the matter.  The office didn't vote to overturn. One guy! Period!
  • the complaint alleged that Glover, along with [others] conspired - False and defamatory; in the "complaint" posted the term conspire is never mentioned or even alluded to.
The Pulse continues to note that the incident resulted in discipline for the employee for using the City's discipline system for personal non-city issues.

What the Pulse did not discuss:
  • Were proper HR procedures followed by Schmitt? Yes!
  • Does Sisson have the authority to overrule the Chief? No!
  • Where is that authority in the City HR manual?
  • What was the grievance policy that should have been followed?
  • What should have been done under the City's Collective Bargaining Agreement?
Drive by, hit job journalism from the Pulse.

February 11 - Olson gags city employees on fire investigation False and Misleading; Cosson knows the email was to threaten City employees but only dealt with speaking "on behalf of the City". Cosson is using the Pulse to spread fear through the employee ranks to keep the truth suppressed as Olson intended.

Pensacola city employees are prohibited from speaking publicly about an ongoing investigation into two fire department officials, according to an email sent by city administrator Eric Olson to all employees this morning. False and Misleading; Cosson knows the email was to threaten City employees but only dealt with speaking "on behalf of the City". Cosson is using the Pulse to spread fear through the employee ranks to keep the truth suppressed as Olson intended.

“If you should do so, you may be subject to disciplinary action,” Olson wrote. Misleading; Cosson knows the email was to threaten City employees but only dealt with speaking "on behalf of the City". Cosson is using the Pulse to spread fear through the employee ranks to keep the truth suppressed as Olson intended.

February 9Olson: Fire officials suspended in response to EEOC complaints False and defamatory; suspended is a disciplinary action.  The chiefs are on non-disciplinary administrative leave.  Cosson knows this but continues to defame.

Eric Olson confirmed that the recent decision to suspend two top fire officials was made in response to Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaints which the men had filed. False and defamatory; suspended is a disciplinary action.  The chiefs are on nondisciplinary administrative leave.  Cosson knows this but continues to defame.

Olson also categorically denied that the suspension of Glover — the fire department’s highest-ranking African-American — had anything to do with race. False and defamatory; suspended is a disciplinary action.  The chiefs are on nondisciplinary administrative leave.  Cosson knows this but continues to defame.

Well I think you see how the Pulse attempts to taint the reputation of the Chiefs while "reporting" their facts.  Each time Cosson writes inaccurately "suspended" it puts an internet falsehood attached to both Schmitt and Glover's name forever.

Let's look forward at the intended outcome of this debacle.  In my opinion, Hayward, Olson and Sisson are just trying to attach enough slime to Schmitt and Glover that neither is a realistic candidate for Chief going forward, that both will be reinstated but will be encouraged to retire ASAP and that the discrimination case will have enough clouds to provide potential cover for the City's EEOC violations.

Cosson is either a terrible reporter or is intentionally providing the slime coating his handlers and "advertisers" demand.

By the way, evidently his attempts to garner additional advertisers is failing and this "commercial enterprise" is starting to sink as he and the pedicabber are already begging for breadcrumbs from the public.

Hard to run from that past in Pensacola Derek.  You made your bed.  You sold your soul.  Now the Devil forgot your name.

Server costs?  Kerrigan must not be seeing the vision anymore.

Well the link you provided to donate describes Derek Cosson as "a passionate storyteller." Is that "progressive journalism" that just means a "liar?"

Oh, yes, of course! There is a certain someone who craves the fire chief position that has been unfilled for way too long. Schmitt and Glover are in the way. Who could be getting the fire chief position if Schmitt and Glover are no longer obstacles? And, does this certain someone have a high-level relative in the Hayward administration...???

It's Big-Hair McClellan all over again!

Omg! What an absolute nightmare these two men must be living. If the mayor is in any way connected to this he should be recalled immediately. These actions have without a doubt created the "chilling effect" the courts look for to support such claims. The city is now primed for a major lawsuit. With each passing day, they're case gets stronger. It's time for Ashton to pull the plug in this epic failure in leadership or go down with the sinking ship.

Hmmm...Sounds like Mr. Deas may have cut himself a deal to deliver the goods. Was he involved in some type of collusion with Sisson and Olson? I definitely smell a huge rat. Even more troubling is the possibility that Olson and Sisson has involved the city and made the taxpayers vulnerable for additional litigation. This is at least a potential civil suit and at most it could uncover some criminal activity that the city has been hiding.

Anonymous, Please enlighten me to where this high level relative was when, "this certain someone" was punished repeatedly when he, and no one else, reported his senior officers racist comments against another fire fighter and his family. Please tell me where the protection was when he was forced for years to work at the station for this racist superior officer under his command? Again remind me how my family was protected every time we found nails in our tires after leaving a shift at this station! Let's rehash how "this certain someone" was skipped for a lieutenants promotion and told he had to be "the sacrificial lamb" for reporting racism if he had the backing of this high level employee? Do you really think I would respond to such idiocracy if I didn't feel my husband and family were protected? Your rumors and conjecture would be laughable if I wasn't sick to my stomach! ~ Victoria

Ms. Victoria - I have a great lawyer that would love to take this case (and they are NOT from here). It sickens me to hear about the racism in the PFD. This city has many great things going for it, however, the under lying systemic disparities cannot be denied. Please don't be silenced.

I thank you Mr. Hawthorne for your kind offer. Unfortunately there is so much back stabbing, insanity, and paranoia in this department, and in this town, that I fear I have already said too much and must graciously decline your offer in favor of protecting my family.

Victoria, I am so sorry that you and your family has somehow been pulled into this mess. I know firsthand what it's like to be targeted. It's really a shame what the firemen are dealing with right now when it's so obvious that the real problems are at city hall. I know it's difficult because my husband's been through similar situations. Unfortunately, we are stuck with a wicked mayor who has wicked people working for him. This is definitely not good for Pensscola.

Repulsed. That's a better name for their rag.

What's so crazy about all of this is how some newly revealed misstep or just outright corruption has come out practically every day on either Sisson, Olson, or Wells and nothing of true substance on the suspended Chiefs. But almost unbelievably the Chiefs are suspended and being investigated for what appears to be nothing. Good ole boy network is still alive and well today in Pensacola.

I have to laugh at the "misleading", "false", and "defamatory" claims you so quickly point out from The Pulse. In your blogs surrounding this story you've posted inaccurate and misleading content, words that fanned the fires of innuendo and conjecture. Not once have you sited sources. Worse, you allow comments that insinuate collusion and point self-serving fingers. Your distaste for City Hall is evident. We get it. But don't sit back and pretend you're above the finger-pointing and spinning to suit your own purposes...or those of your sources.

I'm not a news source. I have a blog. Maren's BLOG! I do have a document or a source for every statement made on this blog.

I don't try to peddle advertising.

I don't tout a mission: Our mission is simple: to provide Pensacola and the Gulf Coast with a locally-owned, independent, un-coopted source for news, commentary, and more. The Pulse is your community destination for bold ideas and forward thinking that matters.

I don't state "At the core of that mission is adherence to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics"

Under this Code that Derek and Drew espouse, once they were made aware of the inaccurate use of suspended, they should have changed every reference.

From their "code"; Journalists should take responsibility for the accuracy of their work. Verify information before releasing it.

Further, their "code" states: Journalists should gather, update and correct information throughout the life of a news story

They have not. Their being a "news" organization is a joke in that it does not abide by their "code".

So Derek, please enlighten all of us on how you've determined that the information supported by facts is somehow fictious. Also, please convince everyone that you are not one of the mayor's puppets doing his bidding. Are you saying that Olson didn't lie publicly on the radio? Are you saying that Sisson didn't change the HR manual AFTER the Chiefs requested an appeal? Are you saying that Sisson did not violate the terms of the union contract? Are you saying that Olson's claim that the two firemen were NOT the focus of the investigation only to find out a week later that they actually were is untrue? I could go further but what's the use? Everyone knows that you and Drew are the mayor and Kerigan's b!£€#e$. So go somewhere else with your mumbo jumbo because nobody's buying what you're trying to sell. Btw, go drink some more "slim slow".
