Slurs and Nooses... The 1990s in the City of Pensacola

Imagine its your first day of work and your boss is taking you around to meet folks and see your new place of employment.  You are a large guy with a military background.  As you begin your tour, the boss turns to you and states:

"You are a big guy.  I'm not gonna have any trouble with you if someone calls you a _igger am I."

Welcome to the City of Pensacola...where thousands live the way millions shouldn't have to.

Well, your career continues with you working for the City and you rise in the ranks due to your superior education, skills and determination.  You go on two weeks military duty to serve your country and when you get back to the Upside of Florida, there is a hangman's noose in your assigned vehicle.

What do you do?

If you are courageous, you make your superiors aware of the issue and expect some action to be taken by them.

But this is Pensacola, they just write it up, gloss it over and move on down the road.

No investigation.
No punishment.
Just a memo to "meet the intent of the Administrative Appeal Procedure."

Interoffice Memorandum

Will a pattern develop?

It's getting closer.

You did a horrible job covering up Fire Chief Matt Schmidt's name in that email.

What is the purpose of this? I don't believe any of the people listed in these letters or momorandums are still working for the city, I know one is dead... They do not represent the department today and they have not for quite a few years.

Reading this made me sick to my stomach. How can this go on without someone putting a stop to it? I know several black firefighter's personally who are great people who do a lot for the community.

Sounds like you have some inside knowledge on this. Were you there? Did you participate in some of these racist acts. I believe the stated purpose of this is to show what led to an eventual lawsuit and how the leadership failed to resolve the issues. It is plain ignorant to think that things like this just go away and it's always amazing to see people defend this behavior by criticizing those who choose to discuss it.

Matt Schmidt's name is clearly on the email. Isn't he the Fire Chief?
Damn.

Many of us in the black community realize that there are always excuses to overlook wrong done towards us in the workplace. Although discrimination is more subtle on the job than it used to be, it still exists. These acts are often dismissed by simply accusing those who have been victimized as "pulling the race card". This is laughable especially since being black has rarely given someone an unfair advantage in any way. Ironically, the "race card" has always been played and played well I might add by whites who on many occasions have been selected for jobs, promotions, etc. over blacks simply because of the color of their skin. Hopefully, this blog will open some honest dialogue about where we actually are 50 years after the Civil Rights movement.

Just information, no point of view. This is the approximate estimate of the fire department today. 29 blacks and 86 other. The other is because not sure of Hispanics, Indian or any other. 5 are women.

Please compare the credentials of the current Deputy Chief with the credentials of the last...well obviously you've been around awhile; so go back as far as you can and please name ONE who was more qualified. We're all anxiously awaiting your response. SMDH

I'm a little confused so maybe you can help I thought that there were 4 black firefighters who filed the lawsuit. So are there 4 black Deputy Fire Chiefs? This is absolutely outrageous if true. Are these 4 black Deputy Chiefs even qualified? If not, a reverse discrimination suit should be filed immediately. Maren?

There is only one Deputy Chief and anyone who doesn't know who he is can easily find out. The Bribery accusasation is probably an attack from someone who wants others to believe he was promoted because of his race.
It's also a way to mask the issues by causing those who may not know to question his qualifications. Here's a quick PFD history lesson - PFD established in 1810. Since 1810 guess how many African American firefighters have been promoted to the rank of Chief...Wait for it...wait for it...yeah the PFD has a long history of hiring and promoting African Americans because of the color of their skin! (Sarcasm). Here's a good question for you since you seem to know so much, How many unqualified white firefighters have been promoted to the ranks of Battalion Chief and Deputy Chief? Did you complain about any of those. Typical of closet biggots. Unqualified whites get promoted no problem, qualified Africsn American gets promoted, that's a BIG PROBLEM and the City was obviously Bribed. Thanks for showing up and proving further what type of culture existed.

Racism class 101

1. "Make false accusations against those who have been discriminated against"

2. "Attempt to make others think that those discriminated against were unqualified"

3. "Attempt to detract others from racist acts that have occurred"

4. "Imply that the only possible way an African American can get promoted is through some illegitimate means.

Not trying to be critical, but your point is what exactly? The discussion here is about nooses and racial slurs in the firehouse. Again, not criticizing you, just having a hard time following how your comment is relevant to the topic,

You took the time to do some research on numbers and then comment. Yet you have "NO OPINION" about nooses and or racial slurs? I pray that you are not a firefighter.
