Firefighters Say Enough - 2000s

Eventually, after years of the harassment and discrimination unchecked by the City leadership, four black leaders within the PFD made the bold statement that these actions should not be tolerated by filing a lawsuit in Federal Court.

As part of the suit, these firefighters made SWORN affidavits as to their experiences in the Pensacola Fire Department and their attempts in vain to get City leadership to make the necessary corrections to the environment.

They stood up for what was right!
They stood up for all of the firefighters, white and black, that wanted change within the department!

Read three of their stories below

Read about the nickname DAN
Read about how they met with Bonfield, Rusty Wells and Al Coby
Read about unfair evaluation processes
Read about unequal promotion ceremonies
Read about a black firefighter being hosed down and laughed at.
Read about a Civil Service Board that won't ensure equal treatment.

THESE ARE SWORN FACTS.  THE CITY DID NOTHING.

Affidavit 2a

Affidavit 2b

Affidavit 2c

Didn't these firefighters lose when they sued the city? If I recall, it never made it to trial. The city got summary judgment, meaning that the undisputed facts and the law made it clear that it would be impossible for them to prevail if the matter went to trial.

...come on Rusty...

Anonymous, so are you saying there were no nooses, no racial slurs, no white firefighters posing as members of the KKK, and no other racist acts? This was all made up? Please tell me your argument is not solely based on whether or not it went to court. Does a summary judgment ruling make any of the acts described irrelevant?NEWSFLASH:I could care less if it went to trial or not!

Of course it never made it to trial. The Good ol Boy network would've never let that happen.
I'm sure there are still some of those ass$oles working within the fire dept.

Hopefully the younger generation of minority men and women now working there will never have to deal with crap like that. If so, I feel confident the Mayor would act more swiftly and harsher than the previous city staff did in the late 90's.

Ashton should visit a firehouse every now and then. I'm sure he'd like to slide down some poles.

"Act swiftly"? Surely that was a typo. Lmao...You mean like filling the vacant fire chief position? Yeah, the one that's been vacant for his entire 5+ yrs. as mayor. Maybe you meant "act shifty"!

A friend told me that I should check out this blog. After reading through a few of the posts, I am completely shocked and disgusted by all of this. I don't want to believe these things happened.

For the record I am not Maren Deweese. However, I am a concerned, WHITE taxpayer who lives in District 6. Although this topic may be troublesome to many, it is my belief that with all of the racial turmoil currently going on in our country this subject cannot be ignored any longer. I'm a lifelong resident of Pensacola and it disturbs me greatly to think that the mayor I voted for twice is in any way involved in any type of discrimination. Please tell me that Mayor Hayward is not involved in this at all.

It makes me so sick. What makes me sicker is that it never ends. They keep recycling the trash at City Hall. They FINALLY fired Rusty Wells, then they hired him back as a contractor for code enforcement issues. Now he's back in yet another paid capacity as the Council's assistant. Al Coby retires, but now he's back too. Dereck Cosson gets fired and he's immediately working as a contractor in another capacity. All the excellent, educated, and professional people in this town and City Hall digs up the trash and pays them top salary.

You can't be serious! I almost threw up in my Cheerios when I read this BS! Yeah maybe Ashton should start his visits at the airport station that's inadequately staffed thanks to him. Better yet he can start at one of the two mold infested fire stations in the city. I'm sure the firemen will be glad to see him to thank him personally for all that he's done for public safety since he's been in office. NOT!!! I'm sure they will be equally impressed with his "building fire stations doesn't win elections" speech.

I am completely devastated that this happened. How on God's green earth was this covered up for so long? What kind of people does this? Those who knew about these terrible incidents and tried to cover it all up are just as bad or worse. It's time to bring out the whole truth, expose those who are responsible, and take out the trash.

If nothing comes of all of this, and I suspect nothing will, it would really say a lot about Pensacola.

It will be interesting to see if Hayward is any way connected to this scandal. Would he still be welcomed in black churches when next election cycle comes around? Or has he garnered enough financial support from the few families who own Pensacola to make the black vote irrelevant?
