And More Sworn Statements

The sworn statements below continue to show what our firefighters endured under a City structure that would not change or acknowledge the culture it allowed in the PFD.

These  affidavits show:
  • More references to DAN
  • More supervisors wearing sheets simulating the KKK
  • More racists jokes and repercussions if black firefighters objected
  • More roadblocks to advancement by the Civil Service Board
  • More nooses in the workplace
  • An affidavit from a white firefighter that these allegations DID OCCUR.
  • Assigning black officers to do menial tasks while white officers were sitting back in their chairs
  • Officer trucks with confederate flags on it
  • Black cadets not being allowed in the air conditioned spaces of stations

As hard as these items are to read, what if this was your everyday workplace?  What if you did not know going into work each day if you would be subject to such actions today?

The stories are repeated over and over.  The entire time officers were objecting to City Administration (PRE-HAYWARD).  Nothing is ever done.

One name with the City continues to appear over and over and over in the documents.

Rusty Wells, Al Coby, Fire Chief Schmidt, Tom Bonfield, Suzanne Humphrey, Wayne Etheridge, all City Council members and those firemen who engaged in such despicable acts should BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES to have let these types of abhorrent, disgusting, displays of racism go on within City walls.
Where was Civil Service back then when you needed them? Who told Ms. Humphrey's to "fail" this fireman? City Managers? BLACK City Manager where were you????????? City Attorney????????????

It broke my heart to read these affidavits. This wasn't in the 1950's. It was not that long ago. No one should have to deal with an environment like that in the 21st century. What is the environment like at these firehouses now? How sad that those who are/were put in charge to make a working environment professional, and safe, just sweep this under the rug as if nothing happened. It's bad enough our fire men and women put their lives on the line each day, only to have to come back to a station where crap like that happened. It actually makes me angry!

Hopefully bullshit like this does not go on today at our firehouses that WE AS TAXPAYING CITIZENS PAY FOR! I'll be damned if my tax paying money is used to buy rope for nooses or white hoods for KKK outfits.

Ashton, you reading this?? Fountain, you reading this?

I guarantee Hayward's entire staff has been reading along. His election campaign team, (i.e., the highest paid city employees who do nothing but promote Hayward and take his pictures) is working on a strategy to distance him from this. I have always respected firefighters for what they do. But now I have a newfound respect for the minority firefighters especially, who had to go through all of this. They had to be strong and brave to live through this with absolutely nowhere to turn. After trying to get city leadership involved to stop these despicable acts what else can you do? I pray that these things have stopped and that healing has begun in spite of City Hall's negligence and inaction.

As more information comes out it appears that Hayward has at least some responsibility in all of this. It shows a true lack of leadership to know things like I've read actually happened and no one was ever punished. I almost forgot, according to what's come out, one of the complainants was punished for handling an issue on their own and "not putting the issue in the proper channels". In other words one of the firemen who filed the lawsuit when both fire department and City leadership failed to act, got reprimanded for handling the issue internally. Amazing!

Everyone in Pensacola needs to know about this story. This blog is great for venting and finding out information that the media would never touch. But if things that are this important are only discussed here, how will things ever change? I guarantee that Ashton's team hopes none of this goes beyond this forum.

Nooses, officers dressing up like the KKK, Confederate flags, racist jokes, racial epithets, blacks being denied training, black cadets not allowed upstairs, and being called DAN for Dumb Ass Nigger. Reading this took me back to the 60's when white firemen use to hose down Civil Rights protesters! Where are all the people who are so quick to comment and accuse blacks of playing the race card? All of this happened and nothing ever done about it? If this is how fellow firemen are treated, how are black city residents treated? How can those in charge let this go unchecked? Were the firefighters who stood up to this being too sensitive? What's the firehouse like today? Who is leading the department and where do they stand? More importantly, where does current city leadership stand on all of this? Ashton Hayward, Eric Olsen, Tamara Fountain, we need answers now!

How much worse can this get? I find myself becoming more incensed after reading each affidavit. Hayward can't just smile his way out of this one. This is completely unacceptable and time for a response from City Hall.

Is the Darrell Hicks that notarized these affidavits the same Darrell Hicks that currently has a picture of Bill Cosby made to look like Caitlyn Jenner in a Vanity Fair spread, wearing a confederate flag bathing suit no less, on his Facebook page with the caption of "Let's Offend Everyone All At Once"?
