Is the Asmar Weekly the only one to get the story. No.
But it did get it first.
I asked for this issue to be handled discretely as I was convinced that the issue, at its worst, was inadvertent. However, someone intentionally leaked the information directly to the Independent News. Mr. Messer’s letter and Mr. Reynold’s affidavit were sent to me, the Mayor, John Asmar, Mr. Reynolds and the City Clerk on May 3, 2012 at 11:57am. At this point, these were the only people to know of the potential issue. However, a public records request was sent by the InWeekly that morning at 11:21am. Thirty six minutes before Mr. Messer had asked for a review of the issue by the State Attorney, the request was already in for all of the background emails.
After I saw the public records request from the Asmar Weekly come in, I immediately wanted the real press to know the entire circumstances. The following statement was prepared by me and sent out the PNJ, local radio and local TV stations. Obviously, once they had this information they saw that there was no story and I was merely acting on the City Attorney's advice.
I didn't bother to share the above with the Asmar Weekly. It was too entertaining to watch them spin the story and portray the sinister actions I supposedly alleged.
